The fascinating thing about fashion’s cyclical nature is how quickly something you once swore you’d never wear can rise to the top of your must-try list. Case in point: colored tights.

Now, don’t get me wrong—I’ve always been a loyal fan of tights, especially black opaques, which I wear almost daily from September to May. But colored tights? They used to seem too playful for my taste, a bit juvenile even, and I mostly relegated them to Halloween costumes.

But things are changing, and this current trend for vibrant hosiery has made me rethink. I’m finally stepping away from my trusty black opaques in favor of something bolder. For my first foray into colored tights, I opted for red, pairing them with a Simone Rocha embroidered sheer skirt at London Fashion Week last year. Now, in 2025, I’m ready to explore a full spectrum of hues.

If I needed more convincing that bright tights are the way forward, Miuccia Prada’s recent look sealed the deal. At the latest Prada show, Prada added a pop of color to her otherwise neutral outfit—a gray sweater and white pleated skirt—by wearing a pair of bold violet tights with strappy stiletto sandals. While the menswear collection co-designed with Raf Simons was the main event, there was a palpable moment of excitement as Miuccia stepped out for her bow, showcasing her own look.

Prada’s styling choice here should come as no surprise, especially since bright tights were a key element of the Spring/Summer 2025 Prada womenswear collection. Among the collection’s floral prints, striped knits, and silver hardware, vivid, ribbed tights added pops of unexpected color. Some models even wore them without trousers at all, letting the tights truly stand out.

For those of us eager to incorporate this trend into our own wardrobes, the key is balance. A slightly longer hemline works best to let the tights make a statement. And if you’re hesitant about wearing bright tights, start by matching them with a color already present in your outfit. If you’re wearing red florals, try red tights; a green thread running through your tartan? Go for green tights to highlight it. Before you know it, you’ll be stepping into Prada’s shoes, experimenting with offbeat hues that stand out and make a statement. Bold colors that straddle the “ugly-pretty” line are the way to go—so embrace the trend and pull it off with confidence.
