Adidas Sambas have had a stranglehold on the sneaker scene for years, dominating with their classic appeal – that is, until former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak was spotted wearing them. That surprising endorsement led to an outcry in the fashion world, prompting a search for a fresher, untainted alternative.

In the ever-evolving world of footwear, a new "It" shoe seems to be launched every week. From Nike’s Cortez to Onitsuka Tiger’s Mexico 66 and Puma’s Speedcats, each has had its moment of fame. Yet, none have quite matched the iconic allure of the Samba. Recently, however, there’s been one rising star that seems poised to challenge its reign...

adidas SL 72 OG Shoes
Introducing the adidas SL 72 OG trainers, which, in their latest metallic silver and navy colorway, have been steadily gaining popularity among fashion insiders. I first noticed them at London Fashion Week's SS25 edition this past September, peeking out from under the baggy jeans and long skirts of several street style icons. Three months later, I’m still obsessed.
Much like the Samba, these sneakers have all the qualities of the perfect everyday shoe: casual yet stylish, incredibly comfortable, versatile, affordable, and with a timeless appeal that feels both nostalgic and fresh. The silver finish adds a touch of festive flair—ideal for someone like me, who gravitates toward neutral and monochrome outfits. What’s more, this particular colorway has been sold out since launch, making it even more desirable.

Last week, however, my luck changed when I saw three industry insiders rocking the silver SL 72 OGs in one day—only to find out they were finally back in stock. One of those insiders, freelance fashion editor Natalie Hughes, couldn’t praise them enough: "My other shoes have been a bit neglected since I bought the silver SL 72s. They go with everything and, unlike many of my other shoes, they’re super comfortable. I’ve been loving them with colorful socks, baggy jeans, and a faux-fur coat this season."
Naturally, I bought them immediately and can't wait for them to arrive. I’ve already planned several festive looks featuring these shoes as the centerpiece, and I have a feeling I won’t be the only one doing so.

Not a fan of silver? No problem—adidas offers the SL 72 OG trainers in other chic colorways, including the season’s trending brown, classic black-and-white, and vibrant combos like pink and red, or lavender and orange.
Proving just how cult these sneakers have become, luxury activewear brand Sporty & Rich recently teamed up with adidas to launch its own limited-edition SL 72 OGs—just months after the same brand released a similar collaboration for the Samba.
